The short answer is "yes you can make money online". The long answer is this: not unless you are willing to do a lot of work. There are a few shortcuts like using Adwords with Clickbank to earn affiliate commissions but most of the shortcuts also involve a lot of financial risk. But they work because once you've made all the mistakes and lost some money you can figure it out. I know because I make money with PPC, but not with Adwords, and it takes a lot of research and testing to get it right. Probably the most profitable thing I do but also the most risky way of earning money online I know of.

On the other hand, anyone, and I do mean anyone, can make money by building websites or blogs and using them to create income from either ads or affiliate programs without spending more that a few dollars a year. And if you really want to work you can do it without spending a dime on your site by utilizing free platforms such as Wordpress, Blogspot, Squidoo and of course Hubpages. But again this takes work and a lot of trial and error.

Do you need to buy any of those so called Guru books? No, but they will save you time. Do you need to purchase any SEO software. No, but again it may save you time. My recommendation for anyone thinking about trying to make money online is to look for as much free information as possible. When you come across someone who is giving you some free info, follow them and see what products they recommend. I also recommend not just following one but many people and looking at not only sources like Hubpages but to also do plenty of Google searches and searches through article sites.

Eventually you'll come across someone you can trust. These are the people you should take product recommendations from because the people giving out real useful information on ways to make money online probably actually know what they are doing. The fakers just continually tell you how much money you can make but never offer any info of substance for free.

Take this website "Ways To Make Money Online" When I visited this site that I came across doing keyword research I noticed that this guy doesn't even have any ads on his site. I went through his entire, but short, site and didn't really see a sales pitch. Not even an email capture attempt. Maybe because the site is new, I don't know, but I subscribed immediately to his RSS feed because I want to follow him and see how much more info I can get for free. Everything I read was honest and true, so he's on my list.

Other sites I visit, are huge pages of make money online claims but never once do they offer you anything of substance. They may even get me to give them my email address to get their free course, but if the free course doesn't give me some detailed info, I'm quickly off their list. You should do the same. Under each one of those items there's probably 100 things you'll have to learn if you're ever going to make any money online, but remember that from a bird's eye view these are the only things you need to learn. And since you need traffic first that is where your journey should begin.

Good traffic starts with good keywords. Good keywords lead to a good content on your website or in your ads which leads to sales. And sales are how you make money online. Bottom line.

There's a lot of programs that promise you the world in terms of using keyword strategies to make money online. There's really only one strategy: work with keywords that actually get people to visit your website and buy. OK. Now that's simple isn't it? Of course not. If it was everyone would be internet millionaires.

Here's the problem most people run into. They have this big plan where they're going to build a website, optimize it for their keywords and then make money online with it. They do all the right optimization work, get ranked high for their keyword terms and then guess what happens. Nobody visits and nobody buys. What did they do wrong? They choose the wrong keywords to optimize for.

Let's say I'm going to sell a new fancy leather boot with a cool dragon imprinted on the side. I get my website domain "dragonboots.com", create a 4 or 5 page website that uses the term "dragon boots" frequently and then get a number one ranking on Google for the term "Dragon Boots". Believe it or not. this is the easy part.

Now I sit back and wait for the money to roll in.

But it doesn't come because nobody is searching using the term "dragon boots". Maybe they type in "leather boots", "where to buy boots", terms like that. But not "dragon boots" I will not make money online with this site because instead of doing the research and finding out what people were searching for, and then optimizing a site, I optimized a site for the term I wanted them to search for. See the problem?

Here's real example from my own life. I love motorcycles, especially custom motorcycles. Things had been going well for me and most of my income was on auto pilot so I decided to build a site just for myself about custom motorcycles. More of a hobby than to make money online. Anyway most people in my circle refer to custom motorcycles as "custom bikes", and as I'm building this site, without any real thought as to how I was going to make money from it I used the language I was used to using. So the site gets built and after about 2 weeks the search engines find it and next thing I know I've got about 100 visitors a day. Hey, not bad for a site that was just for me.

So now I'm thinking, "Hey, I can make some money from this site". So I look for some affiliate products. Don't find any that pay very well except for some motorcycle parts stores that only pay 5-6%, and drop some adsense ads on since I really don't have many alternatives. And the adsense money starts rolling in regularly, although the parts commissions don't really come.

Meanwhile I'm busy with sites that make real money online so I forget about the custom motorcycle site for awhile. Eventually things get slow a few months later and I check my stats and see that traffic has gone up but the income hasn't gone up much. So I pull up the website and look over the layout and the ads. Then I pull up my Google analytics and look over the search terms and keywords.

Here's what I found: about a third of my ads are advertising bicycle sites and I have virtually no search queries for custom motorcycles bringing me traffic. How stupid could I be? I had unwittingly optimized my site for the term "custom bikes", not "custom motorcycles". I never did the keyword research. So I went back through the site and everywhere I used the term "custom bike" and replaced it with the term "custom motorcycle". Within 5 days my traffic doubled and my adsense income also doubled.

Now folks, I want to stress that this site was not designed to make money online, and has a small income stream but this story illustrates an important point. Keyword selection can mean the difference between making a little bit of money, and making a lot. If you're going to make money online you have got to know what keywords are going to bring you traffic and work with that knowledge.

First tip: track every aspect of your ad you can, down to whether an exact keyword is selling more than another. secondly, no matter what fool tells you otherwise the content networks are great sources of sales. In fact I sell over 75% of my sales on the content network. Third, do not limit your ads to only English speaking countries. Over 45% of my sales have come from outside the US many from countries I've never heard of.

Here's a final thought. Just as an experiment I created a blog a few months back, peppered it with a ton of unrelated posts using no original content, although very little of it was duplicated on any other site, and used it to promote a bunch of unrelated clickbank products. The result 20 sales in a week all paying around $20-$40 a pop. I totally expected this to fail since I broke every rule in the book about making money online but it worked anyway. If fact the blog still exists and I regualrly ad random posts and random products.
